Holi is not only a festival, there are
different aspects of Holi which are very important for our life. Holi has its
importance in many ways, socio-cultural, religious, in every way, we should not
only enjoy the festival, but the reasons behind the festival should also be

religion and our mythology. Goes because it is a celebration of various legends
associated with the festival. The most important of all the legends is the
story of Prahlada and Hiranyakashyap. Legend says that once a king Devil
and powerful named Hiranyakashyap who believed himself to be God wanted everyone to
worship him. His great son, Prahlada, began to worship Lord Vishnu. To get rid
of his son, Hiranyakashyap asked his sister, Holika, to enter a blazing fire
with Prahlad on his lap, now because his sister had the boon to enter the fire.
Legend has it that Prahlada survived because of his extreme devotion to God,
while Hiranyakashipa's sister Holika paid a price for her and her brother's dvil wish. The tradition of burning Holika or 'Holika Dahan' mainly draws
from this legend. There is also a legend that the color of the Lord, which was
done in his Rasleela with his beloved Radha and radha s friend (gopis), later came to be a
festival of Holi.In mythology it is also said that the celebration of Holi and
death of Pootna , who attempted to kill the infant, Krishna, by feeding them
poisonous milk. Another mythological story of Holi which is extremely popular
in South India is that of Lord Shiva and Cupid. According to the old statement,
people in the south celebrate the sacrifice of Lord Kamadeva who risked his
life to save the world by meditating on Lord Shiva. Apart from this, another
popular tale is that of Aughdar Dhoondi, which used to harass children in
Raghu's kingdom and was eventually followed by the mischief of children on the
day of Holi. Showing their belief in the legend, the children till date commit
mischief and abuses at the time of Holika Dahan.
