His relation with India
Sher Mohammad Abbas Stanikzai was a member of the 1982 batch of the Indian Military Academy (IMA) in Dehradun(india). Here classmates used to call him 'Sheru'. He was about to turn 20 when he joined the Karen Company of the Bhagat Battalion in the IMA. Along with him 44 other foreign cadets were also part of this battalion.
Major General DA Chaturvedi (retd), a classmate of Stanikzai, told the Times of India that his views were not radical at all when he was in Dehradun. He was a very friendly person. He was an ordinary Afghan cadet enjoying his time here. Chaturvedi is a recipient of Param Vishisht Seva Medal, Ati Vishisht Seva Medal and Sena Medal.
Colonel (Retd) Kesar Singh Shekhawat has also been Stanikzai's classmate. He misses the weekend hiking expeditions and riverside trips with him. Colonel Shekhawat has told the English newspaper that when we went to take a bath in the Ganges river in Rishikesh(India), we were together in the picture of swimming trunks.
Stanikzai, born in 1963 in the Baraki Barak district of Logar province, is Pashtun by origin and is the most educated leader in the Taliban. After completing her Masters in Political Science, she completed her pre-commission training at IMA for one and a half year. This happened just after the Soviet Union occupied Afghanistan.
By that time the Indian Military Institute had opened its doors to the Afghans. After completing his training, he joined the Afghan National Army as a lieutenant. He fought for the Soviet-Afghan War and the liberation of Afghanistan. In 1996, he left the army and joined the Taliban.
He may be the trump card for India?
Her former classmates feel that the background of her training in India could be a trump card for the Ministry of External Affairs. If the government wants, with the support of Stanikzai, a way can be opened for talks with the Taliban. However, India is yet to open its cards on the issue of recognizing the Taliban regime.
India is in a 'wait and watch' situation as the situation in Afghanistan is unstable. On the question of talks with Taliban, one minister from india said that at this time our eyes are on the rapidly changing situation in Kabul. The Taliban and its representatives are in Kabul. We have to talk to him from there.
It is being told that this Taliban leader had proposed to the Indian government that India should maintain its diplomatic presence in Afghanistan. However,India did not listen to him, the Indian Ambassador and other employees were taken out of Kabul.President Joe Biden
